Leadership Conference Activities & Team Building

leadership conference activities

We were delighted to host Northrop Grumman’s annual HR Leadership Conference in VA providing for leadership activities, gaming and team building activities for their corporate event. Curating our event activities with Northrop Grumman’s conference theme was the challenge, so we provided activities that aligned with their communication goals and competitions that challenged their attendees in a group setting.

Factoring in the elements of a great leadership event activity include activities that  align with the context and needs of the participants. Developing leadership skills requires active listening to what other team members need. Activities must take into account the different leadership styles per group and adapt accordingly. We strongly encouraged attendees to try a variety of the activities including gamification activities including virtual simulations, gaming and team building exercises designed to build camaraderie and develop problem solving skills.

Gamification

Get everyone involved in the fun! Introduce games or team-building activities relevant to the meeting’s objectives. For instance, if the goal is to improve problem-solving skills, consider puzzles or group escape room challenges. If it’s about enhancing communication, role-playing games can be effective. Gamification can serve as both an icebreaker and a skill-enhancing tool, making meetings enjoyable while still being productive. Sports simulator activities can provide a great way of enhancing collaboration and team building with teams working together to score points and rank high on a leaderboard at events.

Story Building

Story making is a classic team-building exercise to enhance one’s creativity. This activity starts with participants forming a circle. The facilitator prompts a participant to kick-start a story with three sentences. The first three sentences can discuss the setting, theme, characters, etc. The next person will share a sentence to continue the story.  After a few minutes, a person can narrate the story that the group has made. The facilitator can ask reflection questions on the experience of the participants during the process of the activity.

Escape Room Challenges

Boost team collaboration and problem-solving skills with a group escape room challenge activity. An escape room can have a storyline that encourages problem-solving and clear communication. The theme of the escape room can be related to a company’s mission or value. Through active participation, employees can better connect with the lessons learned upon the completion of the activity.

TED Talk Analysis

TED talks are inspirational talks by experts and motivational speakers that discuss different relevant topics. The team can choose a specific TEDx topic that applies to their situation. The format of the conversation can be a small group roundtable discussion where a facilitator can ask open-ended questions about the TED talk.

Conflict Resolution Skills

Conflict Resolution skits not only entertain but also serve as an avenue for team to understand conflict within internal departments and working with clients. Employees learn the value of dealing with difficult emotions through the different scenarios presented and develop the team’s problem solving skills.  Through role-playing, participants can step into the shoes of different characters and explore various perspectives, foster empathy, and gain a deeper understanding of conflicting viewpoints.

Team building activities should also have the right balance of challenge and fun to keep participants engaged. To ensure that the activity has an impact, moderators set a reflection period per activity for debriefing and insights.
